Celebrating America 250: The History of The First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, The First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown is proud to reflect on its own rich history and the generations of people who have helped shape both our bank and the Bucks County community we call home.

FNBN Newtown Day - Celebrating America 250 - Civil War Documents

The First’s story began in 1864, during the Civil War, when a group of local business leaders opened an independent bank in Newtown, Pennsylvania. In the more than 160 years since, The First has witnessed extraordinary change — from two World Wars and the Great Depression to economic recessions, technological advances and a global pandemic. Through it all, one thing has remained remarkably consistent: The First has remained independent, locally focused and committed to Bucks County, without a merger or name change. Today, our historic presence in Newtown, including our familiar clock at State Street and Centre Avenue, serves as a reminder of just how deeply our roots run in the community.

But our history is about more than how long we’ve been here. It’s about the generations of families, businesses and neighbors we’ve had the privilege to serve. For more than a century and a half, The First has continued to reinvest locally and build relationships that span generations. As we commemorate America 250, we’re proud to celebrate where we came from while continuing a tradition of community banking built to serve Bucks County for generations to come.

Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow. The First is proud to be part of Newtown’s story.
